Montespertoli

Empolese Valdelsa

The area of Montespertoli was at time of the Etruscans of great importance because of its central position along the Via Volterrana, which connected to the Via Francigena at Certaldo. The town was founded in the Medieval and the first church, Chiesa di Sant'Andrea, was built in the 16th century. This church was destroyed in the fifties. La Pieve (parish) di San Piero in Mercato and the Borgo (castle) di Lucardo are the oldest religious centres of Montespertoli (15th century). The Sanctuarium di S. Maria della Pace was built in the 17th century. The monks of S. Francesco used to live here until the French Invasion. In the chapel you can admire frescoes, which were painted around 1600.
