Gambassi Terme

Empolese Valdelsa

Since 1977 Gambassi has been allowed to be called Gambassi Terme. The town has been aknowledged as a spa, because of its thermal water. The area of Gambassi was already civilized at time of the Etruscans and Romans. During the Roman Age Gambassi was an important place of connection between Siena and Lucca. The first official document of the castle of Gambassi dates back to 1037, when Guidi, son of the deceased Ranieri, hands over part of his property and the castle to the Bishops of Volterra. At the end of the 12th century the castle became complete property of the Bishops of Volterra. In the 13th century San Gimignano governed Gambassi. For the Bishops of Volterra this was a reason for an intense struggle, which often led to a real war. In 1294 Gambassi was part of the Florentine Republic. In the small town of Germagnana remainings of a medieval glassworkshop have been discovered. The presence of the Medici in this area has had a positive influence on the development of the agriculture.
