Fucecchio

Empolese Valdelsa

The history of the village Fucecchio is linked to Via Francigena, whose way had a significant point of crossing on the Arno river in this place. In the tenth century, the family Cadolinghi, came from Pistoia, focused their interest in proximity to this junction, and constructed the Castle of Salamarzana. Starting from the end of the domination of Cadolinghi, the free village of Fucecchio began its agricultural activities from which some Medici farms were originated. In the historical centre, the evocative complex of Palazzo Corsini is located near the native unit of the town: starting from the tenth century this was the seat of the Castle of Salamarzana and transformed into fortress by Florentine people in the 14th century.; then Giacomo di Cosimo dei Medici turned it into a farm.
In 1643 the property of the castle was passed on to the Corsini Family and in 1981 the municipality who mounted here the Museum of Fucecchio, the historical archives, the Library and other cultural services. On the north-west side of Fucecchio, on the Usciana river, the Medici Bridge of Cappiano is located. It was originated from a medieval fortified bridge previously existing, which controlled the road conditions along Via Francigena; a brief part of this is still visible in the locality of Galleno. The structure was changed into one of the larger farms by Cosimo I de’Medici, and nowadays it is a hostel. On a wide part of the municipality of Fucecchio, the Padule di Fucecchio, the largest Italian internal marsh, is situated.
