Castelfiorentino

Empolese Valdelsa

Castelfiorentino was situated close to the crossroad between Via Francigena and Via Volterrana. Since 1149 Castefiorentino has officially been a municipality. Santa Verdiana is the patron Saint of the town. She retired here for a solitary life in the 13th century. After her death in 1236, the church Santuario di Santa Verdiana was built. In 1260, after the battle of Monteaperti, peace was signed here between Siena and Florence. Since that time this town has been of great interest from political, economical and artistic point of view, because of the central position of the town on the borderline of Florence, Pisa and Siena. According to the popular tradition a boy, called Membrino, saved the town from downfall in the 16th century. He is portrayed on the clock of the townhall.
